Ties of a new kind
A project by the Fraunhofer Institute will allow Germany to replace the now familiar wooden and concrete railway sleepers with new recycled plastic ones.
From September, recycled plastic sleepers will be laid on an experimental basis along a stretch of the German rail network. If the material’s properties prove themselves, they will then be rolled out nation-wide.
Environmentally-sensitive, light, easy-to-lay, strong and long-lasting qualities are the big plus points for this new breed of railway sleeper.
