Paying with plastic

The Bank of Canada has unveiled its new polymer banknotes. By 2013, the new notes will replace the old paper dollars, starting with $100 and $50 notes, followed by $20, $10 and $5 bills.

The new banknotes will have a radically different appearance, with new designed-in anti-counterfeiting security features. They will also be more hard-wearing with a lifespan at least two and a half times longer than their paper predecessors.

The plastic notes are also known to be more hygienic and will be recycled when they become too tattered or worn.
