My-AIS beacon: small but effective!

Called My-AIS but sold to the general public under the Simy© brand, it is around the size of a mobile phone (11.5 x 4 x 2.2 cm) and only weighs 95 grams. Its size means that it can easily be carried in the user’s life vest without impeding movement. It can be attached to the mouthpiece – the red tube used to inflate the vest in case of need, or to one of the vest’s straps.

In order to make it resistant to the marine environment, the small beacon is made from an ASA (Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) and PC (polycarbonate) alloy: two plastics renowned for their good resistance to weather, UV rays, temperature changes and shocks.

In the event of a shipwreck or damage, boaters can activate the beacon. It has a range of five to 10 nautical miles, and transmits the GPS position in real time by VHF waves to other ships and coastal stations. Rescue teams will be able to act as quickly and effectively as possible. It also has an automatic mode which will activate the beacon as soon as the life vest is inflated.

The boating market, which is recovering worldwide, now counts millions of people in Europe and the United States. The My-AIS beacon, which was previously only accessible to enthusiasts and professionals, now makes safety at sea accessible to all at an affordable price.
