Getting a handle on a bottle

For a packaging engineer designing a bottle is the equivalent of a chair for a designer: THE technical challenge, where innovation is the hardest to accomplish and implement, but where it does make the difference.

Kautex Maschinenbau, a German maker of blow-molding systems, met the challenge of producing intricately shaped bottles using plastics called Styrene-Butadiene Copolymer (SBC) AKA Styrolux.

The design is of bottles with an integrated handle using this very advantageous material, with which the weld-line can be formed without much effort. Styrolux also allows lower processing temperatures and shorter cycle times, which means savings for the manufacturer, as well as for the planet.

Besides, this plastic’s extremely  light weight saves costs of transportation (in non renewable resources and in gas emissions).
