Smack-bang in the centre of Barcelona’s El Poblenou technological innovation district stands the “Mediatic" a revolutionary building designed by the Cloud9 agency and Ruiz Geli.
The cuboid building, covering over 24,000 square metres, has four walls providing multiple levels of insulation. Basically, the padded facades, composed of large triangular transparent plastic (ETFE) envelopes, act as light and temperature-regulating sunscreens, filtering out 85% of UV rays.
One facade has a system that pumps nitrogen into the ETFE pillows to create a fog effect that reduces solar heat.
The transparent, not to say fluorescent, insulating skin should help the Media-TIC complex save energy and cut carbon emissions by up to 37%.
