A team of researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles has developed a polymer OLED screen that can be folded completely in half and stretched to nearly double its original size and still continue to work.
Turn your smartphone into a tablet with a pull!  No such product may yet exist, but the display technology that could enable it is a reality. It was developed in the laboratories of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where researchers successfully created a polymer OLED display that can be folded completely in half and stretched to nearly twice its size, then snapped back to its original shape. They repeated this treatment up to 1,000 times without damaging or deforming the screen.
The display consists of an electroluminescent polymer sandwiched between two elastic, composite electrode layers acting as an anode and cathode. These electrodes are made of a network of silver nanowires inlaid into an insulating, elastic and transparent polymer.

Its designers claim that this type of OLED display could pave the way for a new class of mobile devices and smart clothes, but also non-invasive medical devices and even novel lighting systems built into curtains or wall coverings. "We believe that fully stretchable interactive OLED displays that are as thin as wallpaper will be achieved in the near future,” says Professor Qibing Pei, who headed the research. “And this will give creative electronics designers new dimensions to exploit".
